One of the other components of my simple skin cream as well as my wrinkle cream (“Face, Eye and Neck Cream” which is currently in testing phase), is that of the essential oils I add to them. Many think of essential oils as a component that just smells nice…or not so nice. This is not untrue, but they are so much more than that. I understand that some are sensitive to smells, and some of my testers have asked if my wrinkle cream can be made without a smell. It can, sort of, but only if made with butters and oils that were refined, and if all essential oils were excluded. This would mean that the cream would only, at best, moisturize, or be a barrier cream to keep water from evaporating out of the skin. It would mean there would be no extra anti-oxidants, no vitamin A, or E, no anti-viral, anti-bacterial agents, etc. such as is found in the unrefined coconut oil, shea and cocoa butter as well as the essential oils. Nearly all of the components have some sort of oder to them, and the essential oils are the components of which have some of the strongest.
There appears to be opposing opinions as to which are the “best” oils. Some companies are criticized due to how they market their products, in a multilevel marketing format vs going to a physical or online store and purchasing them. There is also criticism out there questioning how pure certain oils are, along with what might be included with the “pure” oil. The most popular companies I found mentioned were Doterra, Young Living and Mountain Rose Herbs. I use Doterra Oils, but believe that those from the other 2 companies mentions may be similar in quality. I was introduced to the oils made by Doterra, around 2009 by a fellow scientist and co-worker. She was then, as I am now, looking for a way reduce the amounts of artificial/synthetic chemicals in her life. She has now nearly completely replaced her conventional medications with the oils. She has also starting to replace her cleaning solutions with those made also with oils.
When she first introduced me to them, I was fighting a cold that had, as usual, settled in my chest and was causing me a lot of coughing. She suggested I use “Breathe” and diffuse it into the air. I was skeptical, but she gave me her set of oils called the “Physician’s Kit” which contains samples of the oils needed for the most common illnesses a family might encounter. “Breathe” was one of them. She also allowed me to borrow her diffuser which I set up to run through the night. I was sold at the first breath I took; it was so soothing! I didn’t cough nearly as much that first night, so I was able to sleep better. It did not make me shaky like the inhalers did, so experiencing no side effects was an added plus. the oils are tested in 3 phases, and a Gas Chromatography test is one of the tests run. Any impurities would show up in this test, so I knew these oils were by definition of this test, organic. I knew I was going to use lots of “Breathe”, so I purchased into a level of Doterra that gives me a 30% discount. Full disclosure: this level also allows me to sell it (though as of Jan 2015 I have not sold anything as selling was never my focus). Should you want to just sample this same “Breathe” or ‘Lavender”, send me an email with your address and I will send it to you at no charge. Lavender is not only good for the skin, but also is good for calming children (and adults); just place a drop on your children’s pillow at night if they are having trouble settling down, or yours if you are restless and cannot sleep. you may review information about these oils here.
The “Lavender” essential oil is the same oil I use in my skin and wrinkle (“FEN”) cream. In my next posts, I will next go over each of the essential oils I have chosen to use in this cream, and what advantages each brings to your skin’s heath. These are the essential oils I plan on covering:
Lavender
Frankincense
Helichrysum
Patchouli
Sandalwood
Lemon
Melaleuca
